Most yogis consider handstand, adho mukha vrksasana, an extremely difficult and advanced asana. Although it requires considerable strength, agility, and stamina, it can be just as elemental to your practice as plank or downward-facing dog. We will cover the fundamental alignment points of handstand through a study of the dynamic and interconnected movements of the yoga vinyasa, particularly down dog, plank, and chaturanga.  The next step in finding the balance point and alignment in your handstand practice.  We break down key principles for shifting out of our comfort zone and into the exhilaration and light point of balance “nothing brings me more into the present moment than the feeling of a straight up handstand”

Having the courage to embrace our vulnerabilities and fears is one of the most powerful and liberating things we can ever do. This class invites you to break out of your misperceptions and shift into a fresh perspective. We will work on building confidence and strength in our shoulders, chest and abdominals through foundational postures like handstand and forearm balance. Floor and standing backbends will teach us the grace of opening our bodies by unlocking the upper back, chest and shoulders, as well as our quadriceps and hamstrings. These exercises strengthen our lower back and open the front of our body, allowing us to tackle more advanced inverted backbends like Scorpion and Hollowback postures.

The backbend communicates one of the deepest, most beautiful expressions of an open heart and mind within the yoga practice. Backbends can bring unconscious thought patterns and fears to the surface. Because of their complexity, they can easily be misunderstood and poorly executed. In this workshop, we will discover how to achieve health and longevity for the spine through extension versus compression. The programme

Each student will be offered:
– 6 x Saturday immersions (bi weekly over 3 months, 12 - 6pm)
– 3 month unlimited membership at Urban Ashram studio or access to online classes
– Assisting and shadowing in Nikki’s classes
– The opportunity of on-going mentorship (for 1 year)
– The opportunity to join the Urban Ashram team.

Course content

– Applied anatomy for yoga asana
– Progressive sequencing for alignment based classes and movement based classes
– Refining the art of adjustments and hands on assists
– Mindfulness, energetics and how to ‘read’ classes and individuals
– The business of yoga
– How to find you voice as a teacher.

Cost: $1,400
$250 deposit required to secure your space

It’s your time to shine! Start the year on a high with our Motivate & Move Urban Retreat on Sunday 21st February 2016. Get motivated to move your body, set goals for the year ahead and find your inner spark with our inspirational speakers, yoga and movement workshops.

This retreat is a short-format programme packed with fantastic speakers and practitioners who each have 30 – 45 minutes to motivate and inspire you. A perfect urban escape for busy women, without having to leave the city!

Reconnect with your best self, leave with a spring in your step and tool-box of inspiration!
